Chapter 12

It was more like a norm for the powerful men to club in the conference hall. Moleleki was a bit put off by the incident. He didn’t like Majara even on a good day, but the man’s integrity was all that he liked. However, it seemed he had been wrong about the man. Or he hastily judged him. The man halted from massaging his temples.

“Majara, you know better than anyone in this room. You’re an Inspector for heaven’s sake. Then why?” Moleleki said.

Majara was glancing down at his steepled fingers. All these questions the officers had asked were all he was asking himself. He joined the LDP, a patriot. He didn’t do it because he couldn’t get good grades that could have written him a ticket to tertiary like the rest of these officers. He loved to serve the nation. He was a son of the District Administrator. His papa had squandered a lot of money during his days, which Majara still had invested in his offshore accounts. The LDP had opened doors for him. He didn’t sit for any interview. He just showed up at the police academy. That spring, the man knew he was living his dream. It had been great for him till last year when he met Lechofa. The man ran errands for that scumbag, for odd reasons. Money wasn’t the motive. Just the thrill of being a badass, that was all the motive.

It didn’t take long for the man to wallow in serious trouble. The junkie started blackmailing him. The man had done what needed to be done. He had kept on updating him with the blue’s next move. The police could have long busted the junkie for smuggling guns. But he had been the snitch. The man hated himself for this. God knows. But that had kept him and his son alive for a long time. The night in the woods, the junkie was getting suspicious. He wanted to send Majara a message. Saving grace, Tokelo showed up. The man kind of saved the boy’s life, but for such a certain duration. Through this, Majara had kept his head above the water. Well, the blackmail stopped since the man didn’t have anything to lose. He even gained weight. He even dusted the cold cases that he had neglected, not that there wasn’t any lead, but he feared the junkie. Now, this Ntsooa guy had taken away his peace. Majara was going to live looking over his shoulder again.

“Inspector, it isn’t my business but this happened at my police station,” Sebabatso just said. “I need to know what happened to Lechofa, and I hope since you know the score, you’ll be very forthcoming.”

“Your police station? Girl, this isn’t yours. It’s the nation’s. I’ve said it already. I interrogated him. However, there was nothing to write home about. On how he knew Tokelo is the man behind this gun smuggling, he seemed to be conjuring that up. So, I left. The aim was to come back later when he had thought well about how much trouble he was in.
